Smart partnership for intelligent maintenance: Boom and Track Forward drive innovation in wheelset management.

Post from 20. May 2025

Wheelset data is the key to predictable, cost-effective, and safe maintenance in the rail industry.
Informed and proactive planning not only reduces downtime and costs, but also enables targeted use of the collected data to generate reliable forecasts and recommendations for future maintenance. But that’s only part of the picture. The real value emerges when this data is intelligently integrated with existing processes and systems.

That’s where we come in: paving the way for a strong partnership between Boom Software and Track Forward!

Existing solutions and their limitations

Wheelsets are undeniably a key component of rail vehicles. Constantly exposed to stress, they require special attention when it comes to maintenance planning. Over the decades, there have been many innovative approaches—such as optimized wheel profiles, additional sensors, or modified flange lubrication. Yet, none of these solutions have managed to gain lasting traction in the market. This isn’t due to a lack of quality. More often, the issue lies in their lack of practical integration into existing processes and workflows.

This is precisely where Boom Rail Solutions and WheelSense come in—working together to create a seamless, digital ecosystem.

Boom delivers data, WheelSense transforms it into knowledge

It’s simple: all the asset data provided by Boom through its Asset Management system is seamlessly transmitted to WheelSense via an interface in the background, where it is processed and made transparently available. This forms the foundation for informed decisions in wheelset management:

  • When will a wheelset need to be replaced?

  • When should it be reprofiled to minimize diameter loss?

  • How can downtime be kept to a minimum?

Key data—such as mileage, wheelset type, and profile measurements—is drawn from Boom Software’s Rail Asset and then intelligently analyzed and refined by WheelSense.

The results then flow back—directly and automatically—into the Rail Asset system, right where decisions are made. Each stakeholder receives the information they need, tailored to their specific role:

  • Procurement teams know in advance when to reorder components.

  • Fleet managers receive recommendations for optimal inspection scheduling.

  • Vehicle engineers can detect wear trends early and refine their maintenance strategies.

A partnership focused on the future

The collaboration between Boom Rail Solutions and WheelSense delivers results that set a new standard. Downtime is reduced, maintenance teams can implement targeted actions to extend service life, and they benefit from a system that thinks ahead — proactive, not reactive. Integrated, not isolated.

One vision, two solutions. Bringing more intelligence on track.
