Our professionals are your experts

Post from 3. September 2020

Our Boom Rail Solutions combine software with rail expertise. Through our years of experience with various customers and partners in the railway sector, we have gained valuable expertise. In order to offer our customers the best performance and to be able to serve and advise them in the best possible way, we need exactly this expert know-how. When we speak of expertise in the railway sector, we actually mean the following:

We have in-depth knowledge of the railway system and are familiar with the methods and procedures applied in the industry. International norms and standards are not foreign to us. Their compliance is covered by our software.

There are many rail experts in our company who possess this in-depth know-how. We would like to briefly introduce you to the three experts who are the first touch point for any questions you may have. We asked all three experts a question on specific future topics in the rail industry and asked for their opinions.

We offer the space for discussion – you are welcome to contact our experts and talk to them about individual railway topics.

Roman Bobik

With the company since: 2004

Role: Head of Research & Development and Managing Director of Boom Software GmbH (Germany)

Projects

For more than 15 years, Roman Bobik has been responsible for the development of maintenance management systems for Heavy Rail. He was already involved in various projects and was therefore able to build up his know-how in the railway sector. For instance, he played a major role in the new development of the ÖBB workshop solution in 2008. The project is known as ÖBB SAM, which is based on the latest Boom BORA technology.

Furthermore, he and his team in Oldenburg introduced an ECM3 asset management system at National Express Germany, which was designed as a standard solution for regional rail operators based on the BMM. This project was realized in only three months.

Together with his team in Oldenburg, he also supports our workshop customers in the public transport environment.

Sources for expertise

Roman Bobik has acquired the greatest expertise through the numerous projects he has completed. He is in constant exchange with customers, so he can profit from their experiences in the industry.

Question to the expert:

What is currently the main focus in connection with digitization in the railway system?

Digitization in the railway system is a topic that has gained significantly in popularity over the last 5 years. The challenge here is to link the enormous amounts of data produced by the ongoing operation of vehicles and infrastructure in a structured and logical way in data domains and to derive process-related and commercial insights from this. This requires comprehensive IT support, which takes into account purely technical, production, commercial and, last but not least, ecological aspects, and which is comprehensively incorporated into decision-making and optimization processes.

Katharina Moitzi

With the company since: 2019

Role: Project Manager and Product Manager

Projects

Katharina Moitzi has already gained a lot of experience in many international projects, especially with intelligent damaged vehicle management. Her focus is in the field of vehicle maintenance, especially the maintenance of wheelsets of a rail vehicle.

One of her biggest projects is the digitalization of the damaged vehicle management of DB Cargo. The aim of the project is the intelligent and automatic selection of a suitable workshop.

Furthermore, she supervises the project with TMH International. This involves the introduction of BOOM Rail Solutions at several locations, including Egypt and Argentina. The central master data administration and control is carried out from one location in Europe.

Sources for expertise

Whether as a visitor or exhibitor at trade fairs, or as a speaker at conferences, Katharina Moitzi not only collects information from other market participants, but also likes to share her knowledge with others. The active exchange with colleagues and customers brings her beneficial knowledge and views on the industry.

Online she always finds exciting topics that are currently happening in the railway sector. For this purpose, she likes to browse through magazines or social networks.

Question to the expert:

What role will AI play in the railway industry, especially with regard to digital fleet management and intelligent damage vehicle management?

This is a very exciting topic. Current developments in the field of process optimization in fleet management are based on empirical data of the rolling stock fleet and vehicle components. On the basis of this data, machine learning methods can be used to identify typical wear and error patterns, which can then be applied to the vehicle fleet on a deployment basis. This makes it possible to make concrete predictions about maintenance requirements or component failures and therefore to apply predictive maintenance. The really exciting thing about these methods is that they are self-learning and therefore self-optimizing, the quality of the predictions becomes better and better over time and the decision processes are therefore successively transferred to the machine.

Bora Man

With the company since: 1998

Role: CEO of Boom Software AG

Projects

Bora Man started his career at Boom Software as a programmer. As the head of development, he was significantly involved in the core development of the technology BORA and the development of the BMM (BOOM MAINTENANCE MANAGER).

Since 1999 many projects have been successfully implemented under his leadership. For example, he developed and implemented the product SAM together with ÖBB.

Furthermore, he has managed projects for Railcargo Austria, NÖVOG, STLB and others in the field of short range public transport and rail as project manager.

Sources for expertise

His experience and expertise in the railway industry has undoubtedly been acquired from the many projects he has carried out with top players in the industry. Through the exchange with customers he was able to benefit from their experience in the industry.

He is still in direct contact with customers and partners in the railway industry to keep himself up to date. His networks are actively maintained by him.

Question to the expert:

How will IoT and “Big Data” change the maintenance of rolling stock in future? What opportunities and challenges will this pose?

„The better we know about the current operating conditions of vehicles and especially their components, the better we can predict which maintenance measures will be necessary. The “Transparent Vehicles” – the “Digital Twin” – enables the linking of sensor data with vehicles and operational processes using IoT devices and is therefore a key method in modern rolling stock maintenance. The mass data acquired in this manner is BigData, which is stored in Datalakes and can therefore be linked to the individual components. This simple-sounding method makes it possible to make this Big Data manageable and to derive maintenance measures from it. I even dare to predict that in the near future the current maintenance plans will be reduced to safety checks and that the maintenance activities will be planned and executed purely condition-based. Although this process will take several years and requires a quantitative and qualitative high-quality data basis to achieve approvals, this will soon be possible based on the factual data of the sensors and processes.“
